Seabourn has confirmed it will remove its submarines from its expedition ships, partly due to a lack of guest demand.
The line said that following a ‘comprehensive review,’ it will stop offering submarine excursions at the end of its Antarctic season in March.
Seabourn explained that while the submarines offered a ‘distinctive experience’, guest participation was lower than anticipated, and it required specialised expertise to maintain and recertify the submarines.
In addition, regulatory requirements limited where and how submarine operations could take place, it said.
Seabourn currently has the six-person custom-built submarines on Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture.
In a statement, the line said: “Seabourn has made the decision to discontinue its expedition submarine program following a comprehensive review of guest engagement, operational considerations, and evolving regulatory requirements.”
It added that it will continue to focus on other experiences, including Zodiac cruising and landings, hiking, kayaking and snorkelling.
Seabourn said it has notified affected guests and travel agents.
Viking and Scenic also offer submarine experiences – Viking on its expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, and Scenic aboard Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II.
