Lindblad plans ‘new era of exploration’ after acquiring Antarctic specialist

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings has acquired a majority stake in luxury Antarctic operator White Desert, in a move that will expand its portfolio of experiential travel offerings across air, land and sea.

The acquisition is the largest transaction in Lindblad Expeditions’ history and brings one of Antarctica’s most exclusive adventure travel operators into its portfolio. Lindblad has taken a 60% stake for $61 million, plus approximately $6m for cash on the balance sheet. It said the move ‘unlocks an extraordinary new era of exploration’.

White Desert was founded in 2005 by polar explorer Patrick Woodhead and specialises in flying guests into the remote interior of Antarctica, combining expedition-style adventure with high levels of comfort in one of the world’s most inaccessible destinations.

Its experiences include journeys to the Geographic South Pole and visits to an Emperor penguin colony of more than 20,000 birds.

Lindblad said the partnership would create opportunities to expand White Desert’s offering, including the development of new camps and guest experiences, while strengthening its logistical capabilities.

Lindblad CEO Natalya Leahy said: “While this is the largest transaction in the history of the company, it is much more than a business deal – it is a powerful partnership between two businesses that have spent decades pushing the boundaries of what experiential travel can be.”

White Desert founder Patrick added: “Having spent the last 20 years pioneering tourism in the interior, we are privileged to join forces with people who did exactly the same thing, only 40 years earlier on the coastline of Antarctica. With a shared ethos for small-scale, responsible travel, we are thrilled for what lies ahead.”

The deal also includes a new brand that has been launched by Patrick, called Echo Charlie.

Inspired by the ‘golden age of aviation’, Echo Charlie will operate itineraries on a fully restored DC-3 aircraft, designed to access remote airstrips away from conventional commercial airports.

Its initial collection will span destinations including Colombia, Patagonia, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, with the concept designed to combine remote-air access with multi-destination adventure.

“Taking our aviation expertise beyond Antarctica, Echo Charlie’s collection of itineraries explores the far reaches of the globe, from Colombia to Patagonia, the Faroe Islands to Greenland,” said Patrick. “This is genuine adventure, made safe and accessible – the only question is where we go next.”

Under the new structure, Patrick will remain Chairman of White Desert and become CEO of Echo Charlie. He will also join Lindblad Expeditions as Strategic Innovation Advisor, helping shape future innovation, responsible growth and guest experiences across the wider portfolio.

Both White Desert and Echo Charlie will continue to operate as stand-alone offerings, retaining their founder-led identities and distinctive cultures while gaining access to Lindblad’s global platform and resources.

Lindblad board Co-Chair Mark Ein said the acquisition ‘adds an extraordinary set of pinnacle journeys to our guests’.
