Florence hotel Villa San Michele reopens following 18-month restoration

Belmond hotel Villa San Michele has reopened in Florence following an 18-month restoration.

Set in a former 15th-century convent in the hills above Florence, the hotel is known for its Renaissance heritage, including a façade inspired by Michelangelo and surroundings linked to Leonardo da Vinci.

The relaunch positions the property as ‘a sanctuary for reconnection, combining cultural legacy with contemporary luxury’.

The reopening introduces 39 redesigned rooms and suites starting from £1,400 per night, many with private terraces or balconies overlooking the historic Italian city.

Wellbeing is a central focus of the new offering, which features by a spa created in partnership with Guerlain, including three treatment rooms.

Described as a ‘sanctuary of rejuvenation’,  the space complements the property’s landscaped terraced gardens and surrounding woodland.

The hotel has also expanded its culinary offering, with three restaurants—Antesi, Ristorante San Michele and San Michele Grill—as well as a garden bar providing views over Florence.

A curated programme of experiences has been introduced in collaboration with the Milan-based womenswear and homeware brand, La DoubleJ, centred on ‘energy-raising’ activities and ‘mindful living’.

The hotel offers a calendar of in-house experiences, including yoga sessions, calligraphy classes, live music in the gardens and monthly concerts in partnership with the School of Music of Fiesole, alongside a series of excursions showcasing luxury Florentine craftsmanship.

Facilities also include a panoramic swimming pool, a gym, and a calendar of on-property experiences. The hotel operates a complimentary shuttle service to central Florence, with a journey time of approximately 20 minutes, while Florence Airport is around 30 minutes by car and Pisa Airport approximately one hour.
