Emirates has upgraded its flagship A380 with next-generation Starlink wi-fi, with the aircraft now back in service following installation work in Newquay.
The airline confirmed the aircraft has become the first in its A380 fleet to be fitted with the system, marking a shift to high-speed satellite connectivity designed to support streaming, browsing and remote working at altitude. The jet returned to Dubai this week after installation and is now operating flights.
The A380 has been fitted with three Starlink antennas, significantly increasing onboard bandwidth compared with previous systems and allowing multiple passengers to stay connected simultaneously across both decks.
Emirates said the upgrade enables a ‘better than at home’ internet use onboard, with complimentary access available across all cabins.
The upgrade follows similar moves by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, as they roll out Starlink wi-fi across their fleets, with British Airways aiming to have the system installed fleetwide within the next two years.
The service is free for all passengers, with simple onboard access, and further developments, including live TV streaming are planned.
Installing the system on the A380 required additional hardware compared with other aircraft types, including multiple antennas and extra wireless access points to support the aircraft’s size and capacity.
Emirates said 25 Boeing 777 aircraft are already equipped with Starlink, with more A380s due to be upgraded throughout 2026. More than 650,000 passengers have so far travelled on Starlink-enabled flights.
Indulge previously reported mixed reactions from agents to inflight connectivity developments, with some raising concerns about passenger etiquette and potential disruption, while others highlighted its usefulness for those needing to remain contactable while travelling.
