A&K to open luxury camp on Bolivian salt flats

A&K Sanctuary is set to open a new luxury camp on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni in late 2027, giving guests the chance to stay directly on the world’s largest salt flat.

The boutique collection from Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group will introduce Samkani Camp, comprising five architect-designed Airstream suites, with a sixth Airstream housing the dining and lounge space.

The camp will be located around 30 kilometres from any other human presence, offering guests a high level of seclusion on the 12,000-square-kilometre salt flat.

Each suite will be self-sufficient, with interiors featuring blue Bolivian marble and chrome detailing.

The central Airstream will include a bar and serve as the camp’s dining and lounge area.

Each stay will include a private guide and driver, with more than 30 experiences available across the salt flats.

These will include visits to hidden islands and volcanic caves, as well as stargazing beneath some of the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere.

The salar changes throughout the year from a cracked mosaic of hexagonal tiles to a vast mirror reflecting the sky.

Samkani means ‘the one who dreams’ in Aymara, the indigenous language of Bolivia’s Altiplano.

The camp can be booked as part of an A&K tailormade journey or small group journey to Bolivia, with the on-sale date to be announced.
